IPF is a rare, progressive lung disease that causes scarring in the lungs and makes it harder to breathe. Esbriet is used to reduce the worsening of lung function and reduce the rate of decline in the distance a person can walk in six minutes. Esbriet works by decreasing inflammation in the lungs and reducing the activity of certain cells in the body that cause scarring in the lungs. Esbriet is taken by mouth, usually in two divided doses daily. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, and elevated liver enzymes.
