Eliquis is a prescription medicine used to reduce the risk of stroke and dangerous blood clots in people who have atrial fibrillation (AFib) not caused by a heart valve problem. Eliquis is also used to treat and reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism (DVT/PE) in people who have had hip or knee replacement surgery. Eliquis belongs to a class of medicines called anticoagulants (also known as blood thinners). It works by blocking certain clotting proteins in your blood, preventing the formation of dangerous blood clots that can lead to stroke, blood clots in the legs or lungs, or other serious conditions. Eliquis is taken as a pill once or twice daily, with or without food. It is important to take Eliquis exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Do not change your dose or stop taking Eliquis without talking to your doctor first. Eliquis may cause serious side effects, including bleeding, which can be life-threatening. Talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks of taking Eliquis.
