Velcade (bortezomib) is a prescription medicine used to treat multiple myeloma (a type of cancer of the bone marrow) and mantle cell lymphoma (a type of cancer of the lymph nodes). It is the first and only proteasome inhibitor available for the treatment of multiple myeloma and mantle cell lymphoma. Velcade works by blocking the activity of proteasomes, which are proteins in cells that break down other proteins. By blocking proteasomes, Velcade slows down the growth of cancer cells. It is given by injection under the skin or into a vein. Common side effects of Velcade include low white blood cell count, nausea, vomiting, fever, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, and joint pain.

Less common side effects include shortness of breath, rash, and allergic reactions. Velcade can cause serious side effects, including an increased risk of infection, liver problems, and heart problems.
